The Client: Country Junction Feeds

Founded in 1917 as part of Wetaskiwin Co-op, Country Junction Feeds has grown into a trusted supplier of quality bagged and bulk feeds for livestock, poultry and more. With a legacy of innovation, including computerized milling introduced in 1987 and a major bagging line upgrade in 2016, we combine modern nutrition expertise with local knowledge. Backed by strict biosecurity and quality control, our team is committed to delivering consistent products and exceptional customer care.

Challenges

The client purchased a facility equipped with valve bag filling machinery but wanted to continue packaging their medicated feeds without replacing the existing equipment. Traditional multi-wall paper valve bags were costly, had long lead times, and lacked durability, particularly compared to the client’s other BOPP bags which were water resistant.

The Process

At first, we supplied small quantities of PVSE bags by coordinating their orders with other clients using the same bag type. This stopgap approach quickly became unsustainable, as there was no inventory monitoring, and the client often ran out of bags. After several urgent requests, we began selling them custom orders of 10,000 to 20,000 bags. However, the lead times were long, costs were high, and the client was still frequently short on supply. To address these issues, we sourced BOPP laminated PP woven valve bags from India. These bags cut costs by nearly half, offered improved durability and water resistance, and required less storage space. While the bags solved many functional challenges, their appearance did not fully support the client’s marketing goals, and long overseas lead times remained a drawback. We then transitioned the client to a Canadian-made PE valve bag. This solution met every requirement: consistent local supply, strong water resistance, excellent product freshness, and durability. Although Canadian production costs were slightly higher than overseas sourcing, they remained below the cost of paper PVSE bags. The PE bags also incorporated textured beads to improve palletizing efficiency and featured customized artwork aligned with the client’s brand identity.

Solution

The launch of the first “Show Feed” bag generated excitement in the market and drove new sales. Serving as a teaser, it built anticipation for the release of the complete packaging line. The result was a modern, cohesive, and brand-focused look that eliminated inconsistencies and positioned the client with a unified identity across all products.
